Juan Pujol García, codenamed Garbo, was a Spanish spy who posed as a double agent loyal to the United Kingdom against Nazi Germany during World War II.
Pujol insulated his fictitious operations by creating imaginary sub-agents across the United Kingdom who could shoulder blame for missed intelligence. When fleet movements from Liverpool went unreported, Pujol fabricated an illness and subsequent death for his local asset. He reinforced the deception by placing an obituary in the local newspaper, which convinced German handlers to pay a regular pension to the deceased agent's fictional widow.

Klaus Emil Julius Fuchs was a German theoretical physicist and communist spy who passed Manhattan Project research to the Soviet Union during and after World War II.
Before fleeing Germany, Fuchs belonged to a family deeply entangled in anti-Nazi resistance. His siblings Gerhard and Elisabeth established a car rental agency in Berlin specifically to smuggle Jews and political opponents out of the country. Following repeated arrests and the suppression of their network, Elisabeth died by suicide in August 1939 by leaping before an oncoming train.

Eliyahu Ben-Shaul Cohen was an Egyptian-born Israeli spy best known for his espionage work in Syria between 1961 and 1965.
Eli Cohen's career in espionage began not with immediate acclaim, but with an outright rejection by Mossad that left him working as an insurance filing clerk in Tel Aviv. His path changed when Mossad Director-General Meir Amit combed through archived files of discarded applicants to find an operative capable of infiltrating Syria. Selected from the reject pile, Cohen passed a rigorous six-month training course that qualified him as a field agent.

Aldrich Hazen Ames was an American CIA counterintelligence officer who was convicted of espionage on behalf of the Soviet Union and Russia in 1994.
Ames entered intelligence work through a program for children of CIA employees, where his initial tasks included making fake money for trainees at the Farm. When taking his first agency polygraph examination, he confessed to an alcohol-fueled incident where he and a friend stole a delivery boy's bicycle for joyriding. Because officials did not consider the offense grave enough to deny a security clearance, he was cleared to begin his career.

In 1987, Hanssen was recalled to D.C. and tasked with studying penetrations of the FBI to locate the mole who betrayed Martynov and Motorin. In effect, bureau leadership charged the spy with searching for himself. This assignment allowed him to evade detection and continue operating undetected from within the heart of American counterintelligence.

George Blake was a British Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) spy who served as a double agent for the Soviet Union.
During his three-year detention in the Korean War, George Blake experienced a profound ideological shift rather than coercion. Witnessing the bombing of North Korea while reading the works of Karl Marx convinced him to embrace communism. He subsequently arranged a secret meeting with his guards and voluntarily offered his services to the MGB.

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were an American married couple convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and executed in 1953.
The Rosenberg spy network extended well beyond atomic materials into top-secret aviation technology. Under direction from Julius, operative William Perl provided Soviet handler Aleksandr Feklisov with thousands of classified aeronautical records. Among these stolen materials was a complete set of design and production drawings for Lockheed's P-80 Shooting Star, America's first operational jet fighter.
