A Blocked River and an Overflowing Paleolake
The Upper Zambezi River originally flowed south into present-day Botswana to join the Limpopo River. Land uplift about 2 million years ago blocked this path, trapping water in a massive endorheic reservoir called Lake Makgadikgadi. Under wetter climate conditions about 20,000 years BP, this body of water eventually overflowed and began to drain to the east, cutting the Batoka Gorge through the basalt.

Author Philip D. Mason noted that the term "Onguiaahra" appeared on maps as early as 1641. Rather than celebrating noise, early native terms described "a neck" or a "point of land cut in two."

Towering Over Niagara and Victoria
Striking a rare balance between extreme height and massive water volume sets this cascade apart from other giant waterfalls worldwide. It is 226 metres (741 ft) high when measured from its plunge over a sandstone and conglomerate cliff to the first break. Kaieteur Falls is about four and a half times the height of Niagara Falls, on the border between Canada and the United States, and about twice the height of Victoria Falls, on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in Africa.

Recalibrating the World's Highest Drop
The title of the world's tallest waterfall remains fiercely contested due to lingering measurement uncertainties. While Tugela Falls is officially listed at 948 m (3,110 ft), a 2016 Czech scientific expedition took new measurements of the site. They calculated the total height to be 983 m (3,225 ft) instead. These updated findings were formally submitted to the World Waterfall Database for confirmation, strengthening the case for South Africa's global record.

Four Unlikely Personalities Meeting in One Chasm
The Sharavathi river reaches a 290 m deep chasm where it plunges down in four distinct falls named Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket. The Raja Fall comes down in a single unbroken column with a height of 250 m. Halfway down, it is encountered by the Roarer, which precipitates itself into a vast cup and then rushes violently downwards to meet the Raja. Meanwhile, the Rocket shoots downwards in a series of jets while the Rani moves quietly.

However, the superlative of most powerful comes from its water flow multiplied by its fall distance. This distinction elevates the site above rivers that merely discharge high volumes without dramatic height.

A Perpendicular Chasm Hidden in the Steps
The Hvítá river alters its southward course roughly one kilometre above the falls, pivoting sharply west over a three-step curved staircase. From there, the water plunges in two distinct drops of 11 metres and 21 metres into a deep fissure. This crevice drops 32 metres into the earth and stretches 2.5 kilometres in length, running completely perpendicular to the flow of the river.
